コンピューティング及びネットワーキング技術の発達によりグリッドコンピューティングに関する研究は急速に発達し、現在ではOGSAやWSRFに代表されるようなSOAベースの標準化が進められ、Globus Toolkitのようなミドルウェアの研究開発がされてきた。しかしながら、このようなグリッドコンピューティング技術の発展の一方で、既存の非グリッド対応アプリケーションをグリッド上で動作可能にするグリッド化のプロセスに関してはよく考慮されていないのが現状である。われわれは既存の膨大なソフトウェア資産を活用するために、アプリケーションをラップして簡単にWSRFベースのWebサービスとして公開可能とするOpal OPを開発している。

OpalはもともとはUniversity of San DiegoのNBCRプロジェクトによって開発されたソフトウェアであり、既存アプリケーションをラップしてピュアWebサービスを構築することを可能とする。Opal OPはこれを拡張し、Globus Toolkit上のモジュールとして動作可能なOperation Providerとして実装し直し、アプリケーションに拡張可能なラッピング機能を提供する。

現在はこのOpal OPを用いて、われわれの研究グループでは生体高分子シミュレーションソフトウェアのグリッド化を行っている。 また、大阪大学の他の研究室や国内外の研究機関において、このOpal OPの利用が始まっている。
